Feeling Dance-y

It’s a muggy, rainy day here in Atlanta and it’s been a while since I’ve been home to see my parents. So I thought I’d share some colorful fun pics of my mom and ba (grandma) enjoying Navratri a few years ago. They’re pretty cool chics!

Navratri is a nine day celebration in the Hindu religion that includes lots of dancing and celebration held during September/October in accordance to the lunar calendar. This particular year my grandparents had finally visited American for the first time so it was especially exciting. Excuse the sweat-soaked nature, there was a lot of dancing involved with hundreds of people at the temple 🙂

Amalienborg Castle

But this is not just another domed old building, this is one of the official  residences for the royal family of Denmark, notably the winter residence. NBD, just another castle. Except this is on the harbor, overlooking the hundreds of ships going in and out on a regular basis, and it has an incredible history.

“Inspiher”-ed Ideas

Alright, I had to go there with the title 🙂

But on a serious note, with the coming of Inspiher so soon, I’ve had plenty of emails from interested folks requiring a bit more definition along the line of what we are actually looking for. And for that we apologize. We were trying not to dissuade anyone that was interested by not providing a wide range of subject, but in the process just made it too vague to do much good.

Evan has shared a post on his own blog to attempt to rectify the situation. Here are several blog ideas that have come to my mind:

  • What movies/books/authors/etc deserve a shout out based on how they portray women? For inspiration check out: 11 Filmmakers Who Expertly Answered the Question “Why Do You Write Strong Female Characters?”
  • What positive changes have you experienced towards women in the past ten years?
  • When has being a male or female worked to your disadvantage in your industry? How did you overcome that disadvantage?
  • Has being a male or female ever afforded you opportunities that the other sex may not have had? If so, do you know anyone of the opposite sex who was able to obtain that same opportunity? How did they do it?
  • Think of the most sexist film you know. Now make all the male characters female, and the females male. Explain how the story changes. (Be good natured, nobody likes a troll 🙂 ) Alfonzo Cuaron, film director, including Children of Men and The Little Princess talked about having female leads in his most current film, Gravity.
  • Think about the portrayal of women in media (tv, movies, books, comics, newspapers, magazines, etc). Has it affected the way you view females in society, be it unconsciously, subconsciously, or consciously?

This is not even close to exhaustive. There’s no way we can think of everything or have the backgrounds needed to do so. Do you have an even cooler idea? Share it! We’d love feedback and opportunity for lots of variety!!

Go on a walk

When you were little, did you avoid the crack to not “break your mother’s back”? Moving to America, I didn’t fully understand that that was just a rhyme, and was genuinely scared of hurting my mom. Thankfully I figured it out fairly quickly, and went on my merry way. Good thing too, because with streets paved with cobblestone everywhere you turn, Europe is not really the best place to put that particular rhyme to the test.

A statue in Nyhavn

On my walk around the city one day, I happened to actually see this monstrous statue outside the harbor. I must’ve passed it dozens of times before I actually saw it. I don’t know what made me stop that one time, but I got a cool shot out of it!

What do you pass everyday that you don’t notice until that one special day? Take note of it 🙂

DailyUpload_104_November2010_NancyThankiPhotographyCopenhagen once again, there may be a trend in where my mind is lately 🙂

Sunset is one of my favorite times of day. As a photographer, it has the “magic hour” when the light is as naturally perfect for photographing as it will ever be. But for me it has always been nice to wind down to a beautiful scenery, a wonderful backdrop to cap of a wonderful day.
